Book Activity # 6 - Moving Beyond A Vacation Under the Volcano
Topic: Volcanoes

  • two new ideas
1) There are three types of volcanoes: shield, cinder cone, and stratovolcano.
2) The inner most part of a volcano is the magma chamber, on top of that is the ash deposit layer, and on the outer layer is the hardened lava.
  • one navigational strategy
After picking a link to click on, there was a menu which listed "volvano types," which was the question I had started with so I clicked on that. I was also drawn to the links that were interactive.
  • one reliable source of information
The souce I was for Discovery Kids, I consider it reliable basically because I have heard of it. It was used in school when I was a kid and so I have always trusted it.
  • one informational feature
I thought the types of volcanoes were interesting but then I found a section to create your own volcano. I selected it because it sounded fun, but after selecting my viscosity and gas levels for my volcano the website told me what type of volcano I had created, some examples of similar volcanoes, and I was able to watch my volcano explode. I thought that was a really neat way for kids to learn.

Lesson Idea:

A Closer Look at Volcanoes!
Internet Researcher:_
Date:_

Objectives: This internet activity is so that you can explore volcanoes on the internet. You will be learning about the different types of volcanoes and how they work. You will also have a change to look at a couple specific volcanoes and we will be able to share what we learned with our classmates.

There is a menu on the left, with a link for “volcano types.” Read about the different kinds of volcanoes and then select one volcano to write about. Draw a picture of your volcano and take notes. Be prepared to share what you learned with the rest of the class.

Make Connections
2) Go back to the main menu of this website and find where you can create your own volcanoes. (http://kids.discovery.com/games/pompeii/pompeii.html) Try to create the same type of volcano you just wrote about. What type of viscosity and gas levels did you have to set to create your volcano? What were the side effects of this explosion?

Go to the Enchanted Learners website for volcanoes (http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/volcano/) and find the layers of a volcano and take notes on how they erupt.

Your Choice:
4) Find an “extreme volcano” on the Enchanted Learner’s website that you find interesting. ( http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/volcano/) Record what you have learned and why it is a special volcano, be prepared to share with your classmates.

Bonus: can you find on either of the websites what type of volcano Mount Vesuvius is like in our story?

Grading Rubric:
12 points for doing the internet workshop and recorded accordingly (3points X 4 questions)
3 points for presenting the information with the class to help us understand what you have learned
15 total points (plus 2 available bonus points)
